Berwick Open Studios Venues and Artists
Welcome to the inaugural Berwick Open Studios with 25 venues open to the public and over 60 artists and makers over 2 weekends; 26-27 September and 3-4 October 2026.
This is your guide to plan your route and discover Berwick-upon-Tweed’s creative community.
You can download a copy of the map to print at home or pick up a printed copy in galleries and shops throughout the town from late August – including Berwick Visitor Centre on Walkergate. Match the map numbers to the listings below for full venue details. Many venues have multiple artists under one roof or other makers nearby.
All venues are free to attend, and open 10am-4pm, unless otherwise specified. Please also check dates in the listings as not everyone is open both weekends running.

Ali Edwards is a self-taught illustrator and designer based in Berwick-upon-Tweed, creating hand-drawn maps, illustrations and nature-led work inspired by the landscapes, history and heritage of the Northeast. Visitors are welcome into her home studio to explore the illustration process from sketchbook to finished work, with sketchbooks, commission roughs and original drawings on display. Cards, prints, original artwork and gifts will be available to purchase.

Catherine is a painter and textile artist, whose education includes the City & Guilds Certificate and Diploma in Stitched Textiles. She is a member of EDGE Textile Artists Scotland, and she has shown work in several galleries. Her studio contains many examples of her paintings, drawings and textile pieces, including sketchbooks and embroidery samples. Her work is often inspired by the wonderful Northumbrian and Borders landscape. She currently teaches textiles classes in Berwick.

Jill paints landscapes en plein air whenever she can and also paints still life. Her favourite thing is to experiment and enjoy painting as a discipline. “About 3 years ago after retiring it was my goal to go back to painting. I had a mural business for several years in the states and was always painting other people’s ideas. I learned a lot, then moved back to the UK where I ran several businesses and had hoped that I could carry on painting as well…. but no! So when retirement came I started painting plein air whenever I could.”

Aileen paints what interests her, anything from lobsters to landscapes. Drawing is at the heart of her practice, but she also works in abstract. She loves to experiment with materials, tools and techniques – the messier the process, the more satisfying. Unmitigated disasters are high risk. At the moment, Berwick is her muse for its heritage, its architecture, its relationship with nature and the elements. Colour and the light change constantly so it’s impossible not to be excited. Her studio is a window to the sea and she spends more time looking out being excited than working.

Jo is a foraging artist and ink-maker, responding intuitively to the seasons and her local landscape through wild creativity. She paints with her handcrafted inks and pigments, creating works that are both oracle and devotion. Jo works closely with local wild plants and is inspired by human connections with the other-than-human world.

Printmaker and painter, Joel Arnstein is happy to talk about creative processes and techniques. Encounters with other art traditions and cultures during his years of travel have stimulated ideas and his life-long love of colour. Currently, he is working on a series of abstracts; each work with a rhythmic framework based on the intervals between prime numbers, overlaid with forms and colours inspired by the tidal river at Berwick with its moods and motions.

Emily Cropton (Studio 4) (1st weekend only)

Emily Cropton is a multi-disciplinary artist working with sculpture, installation, walking and performance. Her research-led practice focuses on rural landscapes and cultures and is responsive to places and communities. Emily’s work explores the relationships between environmental cycles, life cycles, and making processes, and the moments where these connections fail or falter. Emily’s studio will display objects, maps, costume and material samples from her current projects in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Julia Sweryda Strawberry Field (Studio 5) (both weekends)

Julia usually works from her potting shed studio from home and uses locally foraged seaweed in her artwork and uses traditional methods to press them. She also uses it to create other seaside inspired artwork and paintings. Aswell as this she is mainly inspired by the seaside and enjoys painting landscapes and doing cyanotypes with seaweed.
Juila is taking part after being awarded one of the new studio bursaries at the Barracks Artist Studios. The bursaries, which are available through The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, are for artists based in North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders and offer the use of a studio for one month, support towards the cost of materials and mentoring opportunities. One bursary this year is in partnership between The Maltings (Berwick) Trust and Berwick Open Studios and enables an artist who may not be able to participate in the event due to not having a studio the opportunity to do so.

Chris Morrison has lived and worked in Berwick and The Borders for over 20 years after relocating from Bournemouth. Chris is a painter who works primarily in acrylics and to a lesser extent in oils. He paints mainly local land and seascapes in a modern impressionistic style but also enjoys painting the occasional still life. Chris currently runs two weekly art classes in Berwick with the collective moniker of the ‘Tweed Bridge Artists’.
The venue, Northern Soul Kitchen is a Berwick-based charity which, when supplies are available, uses food donated by local supermarkets to cook delicious snacks and meals. The pop-up gallery space is situated upstairs in a beautiful panelled well-lit space, just perfect for viewing artworks.

Exhibiting with several other artists in the beautiful Abstract Gallery in West Street, Brenda moved back to Berwick after completing a career in Marketing, a First Class (Hons) Degree in Textiles and many years spent exhibiting through Open Studios and in Galleries within Warwickshire.
She creates bold paintings using acrylics and pastels inspired by the surrounding sea and landscapes, with a focus on material exploration, surface and the relationship between colour and form.
Brenda will be showing her sketchbooks and discussing her paintings in Abstract Gallery both Sundays during Berwick Open Studios.

Based in Ford Village, Ravn Clay is the working studio of Keith Webster. Here, he designs and creates distinctive stoneware pottery—from functional mugs to rugged, sculptural forms inspired by landscape, nature, and archaeology. Visitors can expect a welcoming venue where they can glimpse the raw making process or actively participate through his teaching studio’s regular workshops. It is an immersive, creative hub offering a true taste of Northumbrian craftsmanship.

Tidekettle was founded in 2018 to showcase the versatility of handmade paper as both a surface and a medium for creativity. They make paper for artists and makers and take commissions. They feature the work of select local artists including Wee Blue Press, Penny Cuthbert and Trigger Press. They work with businesses, organisations and individuals to recycle their waste into new paper. They make art including letterpress printed cards, artists’ books and framed works.

Emma is a printmaker and artist based in Eyemouth. She enjoys experimenting with and combining different techniques, producing single prints or very small editions. Her love of the sea and landscape influences all her art and she is drawn to natural shapes and materials. Her recent work uses stencils, monoprint, screenprint and drawing to with simplified shapes and textures. Her practice is heavily influenced by drawing from life – on the beach, in the woods, sketching plants at the kitchen table – and I have sought over the years to translate this daily practice sketchbook work into prints and paintings.

Mills is an artist and curator based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Working across painting, collage, print and mixed media, her practice explores control: how it is exercised through class, politics, family histories and cultural symbols, and how it becomes internalised in everyday life. Visitors to Jackal can expect to see work examining the visible and invisible forces that influence how we see ourselves and others, questioning systems of power often accepted as natural.

Phil Rowe is a painter, illustrator and printmaker whose work examines power structures and the ways that we choose to live within, against or beyond them. Combining abstract and realist approaches, he explores the tension between the natural world and the systems humans create in the pursuit of freedom. Having studied printmaking at the University of Maryland, USA, his practice questions whether the structures that shape our lives liberate us or simply offer another form of constriction.

John Fieldhouse is a painter of landscapes using watercolour. His well-established career has spanned 40 years. Most recently his work was shown in his own Gallery in Bridge Street, Berwick upon Tweed.
This is the first time his home, studio and methods have been opened to the public.
“I have no set painting regimen. My process is not about a daily number of hours notched up. It’s more a series of fervent, intense periods during which I am searching for the elusive ‘sweet spot’.
The marriage of paint on paper; I want the light to refract from the pigment, not just light as a contrast to dark. Once the subject matter has been assimilated in outdoor sketches and in my mind, then it’s time to explore the material further; to condense, intensify, organise and transform it with the idea of discovering its full potential as a painting.
Non-essentials are eliminated and only essence remains. Memory tends to sift and sort out into a kind of unconscious selection, with the result that the mind is not cluttered by trivia that might weaken a picture’s total impact. The important elements are retained and emphasised and the unimportant things that do not contribute to expressivity are subordinated or even omitted altogether.” — JF

By kind invitation of Kerry and John Fieldhouse, Anna is exhibiting her willow sculptures, traditional and contemporary baskets and handmade felt items.
Anna’s work is inspired by the rural landscape just south of Berwick in which she lives and works. Referencing wildlife, organic forms and the rich colours and textures of nature, growing a variety of willows, she uses these and other locally grown materials in her work.

Sarah Curtis, a gardener and microlight pilot, who paints aerial landscapes, flowers and gardens.
“Colour and mark making form the backbone to my work. I try to capture the sense of space and distance between me and the landscape viewed from an aerial perspective. I pilot a microlight aircraft. Aerial photography along with the sensational views and feelings I get from flying far above the landscape allow me to distil what I see into shapes and colour from a unique perspective. In addition to being an artist, I’m also a professional gardener and qualified florist so it makes sense that I love flowers as I spend most of my days surrounded by them. Floral paintings bring me joy to create and then create joy for the people who choose to buy them for their home.”

Step inside the shared studio of artists Josephine Crossland and Michelle de Bruin. Their work celebrates craftsmanship, observation and a strong connection to the traditional skill of stone carving. From hand-drawn lettering and architectural carving to sculpture and contemporary artworks, their practice combines creativity with time-honoured techniques. The studio will be open throughout the weekend, with live demonstrations each day, giving visitors the opportunity to see traditional skills in action, ask questions and discover how ideas are transformed into finished works.
Josephine Crossland – Stone Carver and Lettering Artist

Condottieri Glass have been designing and manufacturing stained glass (‘leaded-light’) panels for over 30 years. They work on original bespoke pieces, as well as undertaking repair and restoration projects on existing glass panels. Their workshop is one unit within a 4-business building, which includes other artisans – a brewery, cafe and stone-carvers. Ideas from clients are encouraged, as they always want customers to have as much connection with the finished piece as possible.

The Good Ship Illustration is Helen Stephens (author-illustrator), Tania Willis (mapmaker and illustrator) and Katie Chappell (live illustrator). Together they create online courses, a weekly podcast and free live Art Clubs to help illustrators navigate creative careers.
For Open Studios they’re taking over a studio at Pith® in Spittal during the second weekend. Sketchbooks, drawings and illustration work will be on show, alongside Good Ship Art Club drawings.
