Deliver our Annual Art Commission
The culture and creative sector are a key part of Northumberland’s economy, and Berwick-upon-Tweed is at the heart of this movement.
As part of the ambitious Culture and Creative Zone (CCZ) initiative, Northumberland County Council has secured £1.5 million from the North of Tyne Combined Authority to support sector growth, attract tourism, and benefit local communities.
We are looking for a cultural agency, artist or artist collective to deliver our Annual Art Commission for 2026.
Berwick-upon-Tweed boasts a thriving creative ecology, with established festivals, national portfolio organisations, and a rich cultural heritage.
This commission will further elevate Berwick as a must-visit cultural destination while supporting the professional growth of artists and creatives in the region.

What are we looking for?
We are seeking a cultural agency, artist/artist collective or freelance curator with a track record of delivering ambitious, high-quality art projects rooted in place.
This new contemporary art commission, set for 2025/26, will be of national significance and will raise Berwick’s profile as a major cultural destination.
The commission must:
- Create an ambitious, temporary artwork inspired by Berwick’s unique qualities, its heritage, people, topography, or environment.
- Engage local communities through idea development, co-creation, or participation.
- Attract visitors and contribute to Berwick’s cultural offer.
- Support job sustainability within the creative sector.
Who should apply?
We invite applications from creative agencies, curators, or producers with experience in:
- Commissioning and project-managing ambitious, site-specific art projects.
- Engaging communities in the development and presentation of artwork.
- Working with artists of national standing.
- Navigating conservation requirements in historic locations.
- Managing budgets, logistics, and evaluation processes.
Summary of work
The selected agency, artist/artist collective or freelancer will:
- Develop and manage the commissioning process from concept to presentation.
- Engage with local communities and stakeholders.
- Ensure the project meets high artistic and production standards.
- Provide monitoring reports documenting engagement and impact.
- Work with the Create Berwick team on marketing, documentation, and public engagement.
Budget & Delivery
£40,000 (inclusive of VAT) to cover all costs, including artist fees, materials, production, installation, and documentation.
The artwork must be publicly presented no later than March 2026.

- Their experience in delivering similar projects.
