The Maltings will light up Berwick this winter
Maltings (Berwick) Trust secures the first in a series of major art commissions funded by Create Berwick, which will see artists create light installations for the town.
We’re very pleased to announce the Maltings (Berwick) Trust as our first major commission partner.
Maltings (Berwick) Trust will produce a light-installation project to be situated in Berwick-upon-Tweed in early 2025.
The commission promises to light up the town by creating an experience that reflects Berwick’s rich history. The team will spearhead the project, inviting high-profile artists to engage with communities and schools in Berwick to develop the artwork.
James Lowther, Head of Visual Arts at The Maltings, said, “We’re really looking forward to bringing this commission to life. We are looking to engage with artists from various disciplines, and the most exciting part is the role that local people and schools will play in informing what the final commission will look like.”
Andrea Oliver, Project Manager for Create Berwick at Northumberland County Council said, “Maltings (Berwick) Trust) presented a fantastic vision for our first Annual Art Commission, and we’re excited to see what the chosen artists, alongside the people of Berwick, create together. The ideas and viewpoints of local people are integral to the artistic process.”
Maltings (Berwick) Trust will explore a range of artistic disciplines, including visual arts, digital, performance, and sound, to create something striking and innovative that is informed by the town’s heritage.
James Lowther continued, “The Maltings has a long history of managing successful commissions and residencies, and this new commission with Create Berwick aligns with our ongoing commitment to deliver high-quality public programming and foster cultural growth within the community.”
